The Affair of the Chocolate Orange

Ah, sweet bliss...the first golden-crispy crinkle of foil, the exotic scent of sun-warmed heaven, the smooth, dark richness, hers, all hers...

"What on earth have you got stuck in your mouth now?"

Ginny turned around in her chair, startled. Harry was standing in the doorway to her room, brow furrowed in puzzlement. It certainly wasn't what she would have expected him to say, especially since she hadn't seen him for a few months. And not even a kiss first! But then, he did have a point: her liking for sweets was hardly a secret. She'd finally declared herself "off" Sugar Quills and the twins had sent a notice about it to the Quibbler.

From the jacket hanging half-unbuttoned on his Quidditch-toned frame, snow still dusting his tousled hair, and satchel collapsed against his feet, Harry had apparently just arrived only moments ago. He had also apparently not been expecting to see his girlfriend engaged in apparent rapture with what could only be described as a lumpish object tucked in her jaw. Several dark crescents were on the table before her that might have provided a clue, but Harry barely spared them a glance. This was not what he'd expected when he'd accepted Pig's note (delivered several days late as the little owl had been blown off course) to come to the Burrow for Christmas.

Unable to speak at the moment, Ginny gesticulated wildly, while trying to convey a sense of deep satisfaction and reassurance. She did not, however, get up. Harry looked even more puzzled - how adorably crinkled his eyes were behind his thawing glasses! - and shifted uneasily in the doorway, uncertain whether to come in with Mrs. Weasley in the house. After glancing back down the hallway, Harry took a step into the room, shrugging off his jacket altogether and leaving it in the doorway. Ginny divined that her mother must be nowhere in sight, and willed him to come further in while he still had a chance. Alas, Harry wasn't that adept at catching telegraphed determination. And he always said her eyes were so expressive!

Quickly rearranging the succulent treat in her mouth, she said, "Jzocklit O-unge!"

"I say, are you hurt?"

Ginny frowned, causing some small pain in her jaw as her mouth made a grimace as well. Who talked like that these days? But she supposed she had no choice.

She took the offending object out of her mouth and waved it juicily in the air. "Chocolate Orange, of course! See, they're in segments, just like a real orange!" She popped her piece back into her mouth and finished it off, a little more hastily than she'd wanted to. But then, Harry obviously needed encouragement.

"Chocolate Orange? You must be joking! What kind of daft idea was that?"

"Don't knock it 'til you've tried it, Potter," Ginny returned saucily, picking up a new crescent. She regarded it almost lovingly for a moment, then airily ran it around her tongue.

Harry came completely into the room as if propelled by a mysterious force. He stared alternately at her and at the rest of her feast lovingly placed on the table. Ginny regarded him for a moment, then snapped her crescent in half and held one piece out invitingly toward him.

"I'm not so sure I want to try it," he said defiantly, though the effect was somewhat ruined by the nervous clearing of his throat.

Ginny smiled, and slowly put the other piece in her mouth. "Mmm...it tastes even better when it's warm..." She closed her eyes in ecstasy. "It just melts right on your tongue. It's like you're breathing in the luscious, dark chocolate, and the crisp orange flavor...the scent is enough to drive you wild, and the taste! I just can't get enough."

Harry seemed to undergo an abrupt change of attitude.

"Er...do you mind...I think I'd like to try one after all."

Ginny opened her eyes. Her boyfriend was now leaning eagerly against the table, body unconsciously canted toward her. This could be good. This could be very good.

"Do you want this piece I have left, or would you like a fresh new one all to yourself?" she asked, pitching her voice lower, not at all unconsciously. She darted her tongue out and licked the piece she was still holding, then smiled up at him.

Harry closed his mouth with a snap. "Er, whatever you want to give me," he said, his words stumbling over themselves. "Only...is that dark chocolate? I've never liked dark chocolate."

"You will by the time you're through with this," Ginny promised. She gave the piece another lick, this time longer. Harry's breath seemed to catch for just a moment. She smiled secretly to herself. Kisses could wait - for now.

"I have a feeling I'm going to learn a lot this Christmas," came Harry's voice, just before he leaned over and took the chocolate piece from her.
